State Inspection FAQs

When is my inspection due?

Virginia safety inspections are required annually. Your inspection sticker shows the expiration month. You can get your vehicle inspected up to 4 months before expiration without losing any time. Don’t wait until the last minute – if your vehicle fails, you’ll need time for repairs and re-inspection.

How long does an inspection take?

A standard Virginia safety inspection takes about 30-45 minutes. We inspect your vehicle while you wait, or you can drop it off for the day if you prefer. If any repairs are needed to pass inspection, we’ll provide an estimate and complete the work as quickly as possible.

What if my vehicle fails inspection?

If your vehicle fails, we’ll provide a detailed rejection slip explaining what needs to be repaired. You’ll have 15 days to complete repairs and return for re-inspection. We can perform most repairs on-site and re-inspect your vehicle the same day. Re-inspection is free if repairs are done at our shop.

Do I need an emissions test?

Virginia includes emissions testing as part of the safety inspection through an OBD-II (onboard diagnostics) scan. If your check engine light is on, your vehicle will automatically fail the emissions portion of the inspection. We can diagnose and repair emission-related problems to get you passed.
